Looking for some French synonym and antonym posters that are easy for your French students to understand?
Today I’m sharing free French PRINTABLE posters with you and an idea for introducing the topic in your classroom!
How to introduce the concept of antonyms and synonyms
For students, the words “synonym” and “antonym” might sound weird or complex, but they should grasp the concept easily if you give them straightforward examples and use images or gestures to illustrate what you’re teaching.
Assuming they already know the meaning of the world “gros“, you could ask them is an elephant is “gros“. They should answer yes. Then, ask them if a cat is “gros“. They should either answer “no” or tell you that the cat is “petit“.
Then, ask them if “gros” and “petit” mean the same thing. They should, of course, say that they don’t. Ask them if the words have opposite meanings. They should agree with that.
That’s when you tell them that words with opposite meanings are “des antonymes” or “des contraires”.
Follow the same steps to teach about synonyms and use content/heureux as examples.
Synonyms and Antonyms Posters in French
As much as you teach and practice the idea of synonyms and antonyms, you might find that students forget what they are.
So it’s nice to have visual references for you to point to if they need reminding.
That’s where these posters come in handy!
I created two versions of the posters:
- A version with just the definition and one example.
- Another version with the definition and a list of examples.
Choose the version that would be most helpful to your students because you know them better than I do!
