I’d like to introduce a resource that will help you help your students improve: French phonics audio digital task cards.

For kids learning French as a second language, there are quite a few challenging aspects to mastering “la langue française”. Two of them are interconnected:

  • learning and recognizing sounds, i.e. phonemes, that are very characteristic of French, such as /œ/ in œuf.
  • being able to associate the sounds (phonemes) to the spelling (graphemes) of those sounds.

Allow me a quick refresher on two concepts so that you and I are on the same page.

  1. Phoneme: essentially any sound, such as /ɲ/, /ʃ/, and others.
  2. Grapheme: the way a sound is represented in writing, such as GN, CH, and others.

The phoneme-grapheme correspondence isn’t always 1-1.

So you might have one phoneme that can be represented by many graphemes. For example: phoneme /e/, which in French could be written as ER (parler), EZ (nez), É (élève), ET (et), and depending on your accent even as AI (maison).

You can also have one grapheme to represent different phonemes. For example: grapheme ER, which can sound as /e/ in aimer, but sound as /ɛ/ in mer.

French Phonics Audio Digital Task Cards

There are many ways to foster a deeper understanding of French phonics in your students.

You can, and should, offer lots of printed/printable material for your class to work with (see the phonics lapbooks)

However, there comes a time when they need to HEAR the sounds you’re teaching them and they should hear them coming from as many sources as possible–as opposed to only listening to YOU pronouncing the sounds…

With those factors in mind, I’ve set out to create a bundle of French phonics digital practice cards that will allow you to offer varied practice to your students.

1. Students listen to words that include the focus sound, then build the words with “magnetic letters”.

2. They also listen to three words, and choose the one that includes the focus sound. There are illustrations to support understanding.

Listen to words and choose the one that includes the focus sound. For example (see image), students would have to click on the image/word that includes the sound AU [o]. 3. Kids will read a word that include the focus sound. Next, they choose the image that represents that word. They can listen to the words as well.

Students read the words. Next they choose the corresponding image. If needed, they can hear the words to make sure they have the right answer. 4. Students need to sort words into two categories: words that include and words that don’t include the focus sound.

5. Finally, students get a chance to test their new vocabulary by listening to a word (including the focus sound), then matching the corresponding written word and image.
