The first days and weeks of a new school year are so important because they will allow you to build a strong foundation for the work you’ll be doing the rest of the year.
French Back-to-School Printables
Be sure to spend time getting to know your students and letting them get to know you. If they see that you actually care for them and see them for the individuals they are, it will be much easier for them to trust you.
You also want to encourage them to interact with one another because you want to foster a sense of community, acceptance, and tolerance.
You can achieve that with simple, but meaningful “break the ice” activities. There are plenty of ideas online and here are a few of my own suggestions, with printables to save you time.
French Back-to-School Printables: FREE “Get-to-know-you” Dice
Students create their own dice full of questions to get to know one another.
Pair them up and have them answer each other’s questions.
You will be able to informally assess their question-building and speaking skills. Have them write a summary about their partners and you can check up on their writing skills as well.

French Back-to-School Printables: “Get-to-know-students” Sentence Builders
You might be familiar with my series of French unscramble the sentence sets. This one follows the same structure.
Students unscramble eight interrogative sentences and, then, answer the questions (orally or in writing).
What’s different about this set is that the questions will lead to answers that will allow you to learn more about your students.
You can use this set along with the get-to-know-you dice above.
